“Pink Cherry Blossom Oath”
Lin Xiaoying found a pink quartz bracelet in her grandmother’s dressing box. The beads were as warm as early spring cherry blossoms, and one of them was engraved with a small “Showa” character. When she put it on, a song from the Showa era suddenly floated in from the window. “This was made by your grandfather.” The old neighbor smiled with narrowed eyes, “He was a jeweler in Tokyo before the war. This string of beads… was originally a pair.” That night, Xiaoying dreamed that she was wearing an old-style kimono, standing on a platform with cherry blossoms flying, and handed the bracelet to a young officer: “Come back…” When she woke up, she found that the silk thread of the bracelet was inexplicably broken. Even more strange was that Gu Zhao, the new appraiser of the antique shop, was wearing another identical bracelet on his wrist. “My grandfather held this string of beads until his death,” Gu Zhao gently stroked the rose quartz with the word “Sakura” engraved on it, “He said he would return it to a girl named Xiaoying…” The two followed the clues and found an unsent letter. On the yellowed page, it was written: “The bomb destroyed the station, and I couldn’t catch the boat…” In the twilight, two strings of rose quartz bracelets were placed side by side on the windowsill, reflecting a complete map – that was the place where Xiaoying’s grandfather buried the design drawings before the atomic bomb explosion in Nagasaki. Inside were the jewelry sketches he created throughout his life, and the last page read: “For our granddaughter”. The evening breeze blew, and the two engraved beads gently collided, making a clear sound, like an answer spanning eighty years.
