“Pearl Marks”
Marine biologist Ruan Tang wears a special pearl bracelet – the twelve pearls have tiny indentations on their surfaces, like craters on the moon. This is a byproduct of her research on shellfish farming, and each pearl records a failed experiment.
On a typhoon day, Zhou Chen, a new equipment engineer at the institute, accidentally discovered that the indentations of the pearls could spell out a constellation map while sorting out samples. The inner wall of the most special pearl hides a coin from 1998. It was the first “lucky coin” thrown into the aquaculture net by Ruan Tang’s father, the old fisherman Ruan Dahai.
“Your father saved the research team that capsized.” Zhou Chen spread out his palm, revealing a pocket watch rusted by sea water, “This coin was a thank-you gift from my father to the lifesaver.”
Now their pearl farm always launches the “Scar Series” on Valentine’s Day, and each imperfect pearl hides a sentence of underwater recording. Just like the brightest pearl on Ruan Tang’s bracelet, Zhou Chen’s heartbeat in his diving suit is recorded.
