Watchmaker Master Wen’s counter is always filled with a bracelet of pure silver beads, with seven round silver beads covered with fine scratches. Neighbors all know that this string of beads can “speak” – as long as you put a special receiver on the silver beads, you can hear the voice of the past.

International student Su Li came to study the history of clocks and watches in the Republic of China.
