“Passionflower Seed Bracelet”
Mingxin, a young monk who grew up in a temple, always complained: the morning bell rang too early, the vegetarian food was too bland, and the scriptures were too difficult. The master tied a passionflower seed bracelet around his wrist: “Before you count these 108 beads, your troubles will dissipate.”
At first, Mingxin grumbled as he counted, but day after day, he found that:
When he counted to the 7th bead, the titmouse was pecking at the grains he had scattered yesterday;
When he counted to the 33rd bead, the sound of the morning dew rolling down the lotus leaf was even clearer than the bell;
When he counted to the 89th bead, he finally chewed out the sweetness hidden in the green vegetables.
Ten years later, Mingxin, who had become the abbot, handed the same bracelet to the complaining young monk. It was raining heavily outside the temple, and 108 raindrops fell to the ground under the eaves one after another, just like the bodhi seeds he had counted that year.
Meaning:
The “fragrance” of passion fruit seeds is not in the sense of smell, but in the awakening awareness
The 108 beads symbolize the troubles of life, and only by focusing on the present can one see the true heart
The most mellow taste of life is hidden in simple practice
(The core of the story: the growth from “passive endurance” to “active discovery”, suitable for enlightening modern people who are impetuous and anxious)
