“Prayer”
Before his death, the old monk gave a string of shiny black Buddhist beads to his young disciple Huiming: “Each bead is wrapped with a person’s obsession. If it gets hot, it means that the karma needs to be resolved.”
Three years later, on a rainy night, when Huiming was praying for the dead at the ferry, the Buddhist beads on his wrist suddenly became hot. Following the instructions, he found a young man covered in blood in the reeds.
“I killed someone.” The young man stared at the Buddhist beads on his wrist and laughed miserably, “Now that person’s eyes open in my dreams every night.”
Huiming took a Buddhist bead and put it in the palm of the young man: “Hold it and tell me about the eyes.”
When the young man choked up and said the last word, the Buddhist beads in his palm “clicked” and broke into two halves, with a dried blood scab curled up inside.
And the morning bell came from afar – it was dawn.
