“The Promise of Citrine”
Lin Xia found a citrine necklace in her grandmother’s old wooden box, with flame-like patterns inside the crystal. “This is a gem that can make wishes come true,” her grandmother once said mysteriously, “but every time it comes true, there will be one more crack.”
That night, Lin Xia wore the necklace to a company party. When she secretly hoped that her hated supervisor would make a fool of himself, he suddenly tripped over the red wine, and the crystal quietly cracked.
The next day, Chen Mo, a neighbor she had been secretly in love with for many years, took the initiative to ask her out for coffee. Surprised, Lin Xia found that the cracks in the crystal were like spider webs. Late at night, she suddenly woke up – Chen Mo was standing by the bed, holding a photo of her grandmother when she was young.
“I’ve waited for sixty years,” he stroked the same citrine necklace in the photo with his fingertips, “It’s time to return the borrowed luck to my grandmother.” The crystal shattered into powder in his hands, and Lin Xia finally remembered – when she was drowning in her childhood, her grandmother did say “use other people’s luck to save you.”
In the morning light, Chen Mo disappeared. Lin Xia found a pawn ticket at the bottom of the necklace box: In 1948, a pawn shop exchanged a life for a piece of citrine.
