“Tassel Knot”
Aning, a mute girl in the tailor shop, always disassembles the tassels of old cheongsams on rainy days. She weaves silk threads into bracelets and embellishes them with tiny silver bells, but never sells them. The children in the town say that Aning’s tassels are entangled with the whispers of the dead souls – the owners of those cheongsams all died in accidents, and the silk threads are soaked with unfinished obsessions.
One night, a gambler stole the bracelet to pay off his debts, and the next day he was found drowned in a shallow stream, with three inches of wet tassels wrapped around his wrist, and blood beads condensed on the inner wall of the bell. The police pried open Aning’s sewing box, and the faded medical records were neatly arranged inside: each tassel corresponds to a terminally ill patient. She disassembled the clothes of the dead and woven their pain into a tangible form.
“When it hurts, just shake the bell.” She wrote on the note, “They can feel at ease when they hear the echo.”
Now the tailor shop has become a tourist attraction, and tourists are scrambling to buy imitation tassel bracelets. No one noticed that the new bells… never rang.
