“Purple Shadow”
Lin Xiaowan found a string of amethyst bracelets in her grandmother’s old wooden box. There was a silver light trace inside each bead, like a sealed moonlight. Before her grandmother died, she said: “This string of beads will lead you to the truth…” On the first night she wore it, Lin Xiaowan dreamed that she was standing in an unfamiliar old house in Jiangnan. The amethyst glowed in the moonlight, and she heard the sobbing of a girl in her ears: “Save me…” When she woke up the next day, she found that the largest bead on the bracelet had turned light pink. What’s even more strange is that when the new director of the company, Lu Yuan, saw her wrist, his face suddenly turned pale. Lin Xiaowan followed the dream to the old house on the outskirts of the city, and dug out a rusty iron box at the place where the amethyst suddenly became hot. Inside was a yellowed photo: the young grandmother was wearing a cheongsam, and a handsome officer stood beside her, and they each wore half of the amethyst bracelet on their wrists. “You are finally here.” Lu Yuan’s voice came from behind, holding the other half of the amethyst in his hand, “My grandfather waited for sixty years, just to know who reported them to the spies…” The amethyst suddenly burst into a dazzling light, and the two strings of beads automatically joined in the air. Lin Xiaowan could see clearly that each silver mark was carved by her grandmother with an embroidery needle back then – there were underground party lists and spies’ code names hidden in it. The rain was pouring down, and the amethyst projected a dusty image in the rain curtain: it turned out that the informer was the grandfather of a certain senior official today, and grandma had to shoot with her own hands to send her beloved away… “So this bracelet…” Lin Xiaowan burst into tears.
“It’s not a curse,” Lu Yuan said softly, “it’s the understanding and courage that grandma left us.”
