“The Third Eye of the Lucky Cat”
At the deepest part of the antique alley is a “Chilingtang”. In the glass cabinet is a strange cinnabar lucky cat bracelet – all nine cat eyes are dotted blood red. The proprietress said that this was made by an onmyoji during the Showa period, “using cinnabar soaked in live cat blood, specifically for attracting windfalls.”
After the poor painter Lin Mian stole the bracelet, his paintings suddenly became popular. However, for every painting sold, one cat’s eye turned into a black hole. When the last eye oozed blood, he saw nine rotting cats lying on his shoulders in the mirror.
“They never want money.” The proprietress suddenly appeared behind him and pressed the bracelet into Lin Mian’s chest, “They want you to attract wealth for them forever.”
Now “Chilingtang” has a new owner, and on the bracelet on his wrist, the nine lucky cats all have blood-red eyes.
(The meaning of the cinnabar lucky cat bracelet: a contract to exchange life for luck, greed itself is the most fierce evil)
