“Warm Jade”
Mingyue, an antique appraiser, wears a bracelet of Hetian jade on her wrist all year round. Seven white jade seeds are strung together with red ropes, and each one is tinged with a faint yellow. Her peers all laughed at her for wearing a fake – the real good jade should be snow-white and flawless. It was not until the auction that the young jade carving master Hanchuan pointed out in public: “The color of this string of jade is the warm yellow color that can only be obtained by fumigating with old Tibetan medicine for three years in the ancient Ming Dynasty.” He raised a magnifying glass, and under the light, dark lines as thin as hair emerged inside the jade beads – they turned out to be seven miniature carvings of “Pictures of Farming and Weaving”. “My grandfather’s notes mentioned it,” Fu Hanchuan opened the yellowed work log, “In 1948, he redeemed this string of jade from the pawnshop and gave it to a lady who always came to pawn embroidery.” Mingyue gently stroked the almost smooth “Moon” mark on the jade beads, which was her grandmother’s maiden name. Today, their jade carving studio always produces the “Warm Jade Series” on the winter solstice. Each piece of jade carries a century-old story hidden in its medicinal fragrance.
