“The Reincarnation of the Jade Bracelet”
Antique restorer Zhou Tang received a jade bracelet that was broken into three pieces. The client was an old lady with Alzheimer’s disease, who kept repeating: “Fix it… Tangli… Promise…”
During the restoration process:
On the first night, she dreamed of a school in the Republic of China, where a female student gave the jade bracelet to a classmate who was going to the battlefield: “Keep an eye on the country for me”;
On the third night, under the desk lamp, a very fine scratch suddenly appeared on the broken end of the bracelet – the word “Tangli” was cleverly hidden in the pattern;
On the seventh night, the old lady’s granddaughter When she came to visit, she was wearing a pear blossom hairpin made of the same material: “Grandma’s real name is Tangli, and this bracelet is a token of her and her comrades…”
Zhou Tang put the jade bracelet repaired by Kintsugi back into the old man’s hands, and the old man’s cloudy eyes suddenly became clear: “In 1937…did the pear blossoms in Nanjing…bloom?”
Meaning
Unbreakable oath: The jade bracelet was broken and repaired, symbolizing the promise that was still upheld after hardships
The mark of memory: The truly important past will last forever in another form
The inheritance of craftsmanship: The “incomplete beauty” of Kintsugi craftsmanship implicitly conforms to the truth of life
