“Green Sandalwood”
When Lin Wan was packing up her grandmother’s belongings, she found a carved wooden box at the bottom of a mahogany box. She pushed open the copper buckle, and inside lay a string of green sandalwood Buddhist beads. The eighteen beads glowed with a dim green light, and were warm to the touch, but with a hint of coolness.
Her grandmother often wore this string of Buddhist beads when she was alive. Lin Wan remembered that she always said: “Sandalwood is spiritual and can remember the owner’s thoughts.”
That night, Lin Wan put the Buddhist beads on her pillow and fell asleep. In her dream, she returned to the yard of her childhood. Her grandmother sat on a rattan chair, twisting the Buddhist beads in her hands and humming an ancient tune. The sandalwood was faint, and Lin Wan suddenly heard her grandmother say: “Wan Wan, don’t be afraid to move forward, I’m always here.”
When she woke up, the morning light outside the window was dim, and the Buddhist beads were wrapped around her wrist at some point, exuding a faint fragrance. Lin Wan lowered her head and sniffed lightly. In a trance, it seemed as if her grandmother’s hand was gently stroking her hair.
Later, whenever she was confused, the Buddhist beads would always warm up slightly, as if reminding her that some love never leaves.
