“The Fable of Sandalwood and Emerald”
Deep in the ancient forest, there grows a thousand-year-old sandalwood. Its wood is hard and its fragrance is calm. Many birds live on its branches. In the valley not far away, there is a forgotten emerald. It is crystal clear, but no one has discovered its brilliance.
One day, a mountain torrent broke out, and the stream washed the land, and the emerald was washed to the foot of the sandalwood. The sandalwood looked down at the gem half covered by the mud and asked: “Who are you? Why are you stranded here?”
The emerald sighed: “I should have been inlaid in the crown, but I was buried because of the war. Now no one knows my value.”
The sandalwood pondered for a moment and said: “Although I am not as luxurious as gold and jade, I have experienced wind and rain and still stand upright. Why don’t we accompany each other, you borrow my calmness, and I borrow your brilliance.”
So, the sandalwood gave up a branch, and the craftsman carved it into beads, and the emerald was inlaid in it, turning it into a string of bracelets. The person who wears it has both the toughness of sandalwood and the wisdom of gemstones.
Meaning:
The true value lies not in self-admiration, but in mutual achievement. The combination of the thickness of sandalwood and the brilliance of emerald can become a treasure passed down from generation to generation.
