“Goldfish Bracelet”
Lin Xia’s grandmother had an old habit – every summer, she would go to the goldfish stall at the entrance of the alley to buy two small goldfish and keep them in a celadon tank. She said that the way the goldfish swam was very similar to the paper fish that her grandfather folded for her by the river when she was young, swaying back and forth, with the tenderness of the old times.
After her grandmother passed away, Lin Xia sorted out her belongings and found a faded red rope bracelet deep in the drawer. Three small glass beads were hung on the rope, and each bead contained a miniature goldfish, glowing orange-red in the sun. She suddenly remembered that this was a “gift” she bought for her grandmother at the temple fair stall with her pocket money when she was seven years old. It cost five yuan for three fish, rough but bright.
“This fish won’t live long, it’s better to buy a fake one that will swim forever.” That year, her grandmother smiled and put on the bracelet and never took it off again.
Lin Xia put the goldfish bracelet on her wrist, and the next day she walked to the goldfish stall by some strange coincidence. The stall owner was a stranger, but he handed her a paper bag: “The old lady made a reservation last year and said that if she didn’t come, she would give it to the girl wearing the goldfish bracelet.”
Inside the paper bag was a pair of transparent fish-shaped earrings, with two lines of small words written in gold paint on the fins:
“Real fish will age, fake fish will become old, only thoughts will never swim to the end.”
Lin Xia pinched the earrings and suddenly felt the bracelet on her wrist slightly warm, as if someone had gently touched her hair across the years.
