The Fable of Red Agate
Once upon a time, there was a kind woodcutter named Amu. One day, when he was chopping wood in the mountains, he found a glowing red agate. As long as he held it in his hand, he could dispel the cold and even relieve his pain.
Soon, the greedy jeweler Jia Fugui heard about this and pretended to be friends with Amu, wanting to buy the gem. Amu refused at first, but later a child in the village fell ill and urgently needed money to buy medicine, so he had to reluctantly sell the red agate.
However, as soon as the gem came into Jia Fugui’s hands, it immediately lost its luster. He came back angrily to question Amu, but when the gem returned to the woodcutter’s palm, it regained its magical power. Jia Fugui was so angry that he reached out to grab it, but the red agate fell to the ground with a “snap” and broke into countless pieces.
In an instant, the fragments turned into dots of red light and flew to the poor people in the village, making their houses warm; and Jia Fugui was left with only a handful of ash in his hand.
**Meaning**: A greedy person will never get the real treasure; only a kind heart can make beauty last forever.
